My First Review: Clash Royale (Mobile Game)

I want to keep this one short and sweet for my first review. I started playing clash nearly six months ago and wanted to share my thoughts as we as a “pros” and “cons” list.

First of all visually speaking the game loois amazing, the graphics are clean and crisp and the animations consistent. The founding company SuperCell spares no details and provides the game continuous attention. This essentially means the game is constantly being tweaked and updated for optimal gameplay. Now, the gameplay itself. At face value clash royale is a strategy game where players selected “decks” of 8 cards from an expensive list. Each card comes with a specific ability and a predetermined hit-points. The users then engage in battle until a victor has been crowned or the time limit has expired. The gameplay itself is similar to chess but the prices are always in motion for a short period of time. The expansive collection of cards, each with their own unique set of strengths and weaknesses, allows for a wide variety of strategies. The gameplay is fast paced. Thought-invoking and overall entertaining. This leads me to my “pros”. Clash royale is a well manicured and polished product that provides fun gameplay with prime visuals. Alas, the “cons”. Clash royale is overshadowed by its owner, Supercell. There is a matchmaking algorithm built in to entice players to buy additional cards and other “goodies” in order to stay competitive. In addition, the same algorithm is designed to cause talented players to lose if by chance their win streak gets to high. The shop provided by supercell is overpriced and gave me no incentive to make purchases. Because a free-to-play gamer like myself refused to spend money in their shop. Ultimately my advancement in the game was hindered. Overall I would say Clash Royale is a gameplay masterpiece greatly overshadowed by Supercell’s greed. Rating: 5.9/10.
